Tuesday morning at the electric circus

Electric lights glowed like magic beneath the circus tent canvas on Monday evening. By 10 the next morning, the laundry demonstration was underway, with small appliances headlining the afternoon. The grand finale: two locals facing off in an electric cooking contest.

That was how Louisan Mamer remembered a typical stop. She had grown up on a southern Illinois farm without electricity or running water.

In 1935, the Rural Electrification Administration hired her as a home-electrification specialist. She went on to establish the Farm Show and take it on the road. It became known as the “electric circus.”

The crowds were awestruck. For them, washday meant hauling and heating water, scrubbing clothes, and wringing wet fabric by hand. After years of that work, how would you react to seeing a washing machine?

We thought Mamer’s title felt oddly current. And her story made us wonder: maybe we need the home-electrification specialist again?

That person could put on a show, find colleagues who have quietly figured something out with a new tool, and give them the floor, so the rest of us can share their excitement about what work might become.

It sounds rather like internal communications…
