Closer to the work

A clear signal this week is at GSK.

The role is called Head of Strategic Projects, Operations and AI, Internal Communications, and the brief puts AI transformation inside the communications function: use cases, capability building, behavior change, and partnership with Tech leaders.

Capital One puts a similar idea inside Customer Protection Operations. The manager role owns associate enablement and communications for how the operation trains, mentors, manages, and measures associate success in a world of AI tools.

Our read is that more organizations are hiring IC closer to the places where work changes: the leader conversation, the workflow, the channel rules, the feedback loop, and the proof that people understood enough to act.

Practitioners are noticing it too. Kate Shanks wrote that comms works best when it is aligned to leadership behavior, decisions, and processes. Gab Ferree says AI work in comms becomes a capacity, process, and business-value question.

Then there is the academic research. A Journal of Organizational Change Management study found that change communication is shaped by timing, scope, content, channels, credibility, and honesty. And a Public Relations Review paper makes the AI version of the point: education, co-piloting, transparent communication, governance, and room to experiment all matter.

So maybe the useful question is smaller than the operating-model debate:

How close is communication to the work it is supposed to change?

  • Close enough to hear the manager question?

  • Close enough to see where the tool fails?

  • Close enough to know which metric matters after the announcement has done its job?
