Information overload

Sharon O’Dea expected around 40 people at her information overload workshop. More than 100 came. They spent 40 minutes working out what to cut.

Her session was part of Unily’s annual Unite conference, held September 29–30 in London and online. Attendees have been sharing their notes under #OverheardAtUnite. In Sharon’s account, overload is a design outcome: something communicators can change through decisions about what they send.

Attendee Edeje Onwude recounts how Sharon borrowed from Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote, using means, opportunity, and motive to examine employee attention. Can the person receive the communication? When could they give it their attention? What would make it matter to them?

Laura Marinica at Kantar left the session planning to try the models with colleagues. Kantar technology leader Delia Harvey offered Enterprise Tech as a testing ground in the comments on her post.

We’d be curious to hear what employees themselves would choose to keep.

Among UK employees surveyed for the IC Index 2026, those who could choose which topics they received were more likely to find their employer’s communications relevant: 76%, compared with 51% among those who couldn’t.

If you’ve tried giving employees more choice over the updates they receive, we’d like to hear how it went. What did people choose to keep, and did anything important get missed?
