The “what about this?” person

An internal comms leader recently told us about a former boss who called him her “what about this?” person. She brought him into planning meetings where the team would work through the playbook. He would routinely notice something they had missed and ask, “What about this?”

Often, the answer was: we haven’t thought of that. The team would add a contingency and hope it was never needed. Much of that work was never put into play, he said, and rarely received much credit.

Sometimes the question changes the plan itself. If the revised plan works, how would anyone know what the original plan might have caused?

We had this story in mind while reading one of Anthropic’s current internal communication roles. The company wants someone who can “see around corners.” The posting also says many employees rarely see the work this person would support unless something goes wrong.

Maybe that ability to “see around corners” comes partly from the view internal communicators have across functions, leaders, and audiences. The leader we spoke with had also worked in journalism, where following the awkward question was part of the job.

During our call, we wondered who else does this for a living. The intelligence community came to mind. The CIA includes preempting threats in its mission. So how does it talk about work whose best outcome may be that a threat never materializes? And what keeps people going when nobody sees what their judgment may have prevented?

One targeting analyst describes what makes the work worthwhile. Doing the job well can mean someone gets to go home who otherwise might not, and never knows why.

That may be enough for the person doing the work. The institution still has to decide what counts. In the Intelligence Community’s public performance rules, an employee is assessed on the result and on how the work was done.

That distinction matters when success leaves little evidence. Critical thinking, judgment, and the courage to express a professional view all count. The rules also expect managers to give regular feedback and recognize excellent work.

So maybe in your next performance conversation, bring one “what about this?” moment and share:

  1. What you noticed

  2. When and how you raised it

  3. What changed in the plan

  4. What risk that change reduced

  5. What evidence supports that judgment

The contingency might never leave the drawer. The original plan might never be tested. His boss still knew why she wanted him in the room.
