Someone interesting to sit beside
This week on the Knowledge Project, Shane Parrish sits down with Tobi Lütke, Shopify’s CEO.
Tobi talks about their AI agent, River, and why he wanted colleagues to use it in open Slack channels. Anyone can watch a colleague ask something, see what happens, and join in.
His reasoning was unexpectedly affectionate. They used to seat junior and senior engineers together. People picked things up by being nearby. He wanted some of that back.
All this technology, and part of his ambition is something very human: to give us someone interesting to sit beside. And make room for that lovely little discovery: “Oh, you can do that?”
One job description we read this week includes developing champion networks and tracking adoption. It’s easy to picture the list of names. But what do colleagues get to see those champions doing?
Perhaps, alongside “Who do people listen to?”, there’s another question:
“Where could they pull up a chair?”
