Making enough room for the answer
As Jenni Field describes it, Comms Reboot begins with a blank agenda.
People write the problems they want to work through on post-it notes. Facilitators gather them into themes, and the breakout sessions grow from what is in the room that day. The experts are there to facilitate rather than solve everything for everyone.
After the Toronto edition, Travis Dutka described the work as creating space for answers to emerge.
The blank agenda is not quite the same as an empty one. Everyone arrives with a different view of the problem, and perhaps a piece of the answer.
A review of 65 studies of group decisions found one reason those pieces do not always come together. Groups talked far more about what everyone already knew than about information held by only one person.
Perhaps that is part of what Dutka’s phrase is getting at. The room may already hold pieces of the answer. Creating space may be less about leaving the agenda open than giving those pieces a chance to reach one another.
The workplace version may be familiar: another pass through the town-hall slides, while the thing that could change the conversation stays with someone who has not yet spoken.
The Perplexity description makes a small but telling choice. Its Internal Communications Manager will “own how information moves through Perplexity.” The first responsibility is to listen and learn across the company, understanding what might need to be amplified or addressed. By the time the all-hands appears, the conversation is already under way.
At Uniphore, the run-of-show is not the whole event. Pre-event communication and agenda creation come before it; follow-up comes after.
Neither role begins at the microphone or ends with the last slide. IC stays with the conversation before, during and after it: shaping how people arrive, what has a chance to surface and what follows them out.
The coming event season offers more places for those pieces to meet. From Ragan’s Employee Experience Conference in Nashville on August 3–5, through Workshop’s BrightSide in Omaha on September 23, to IoIC’s day on the human work of IC in Birmingham on October 15, the agendas keep placing AI beside trust, judgment, listening, change, and connection. They look like subjects people want to think through with peers.
Somewhere between Comms Reboot’s post-it notes and Uniphore’s run-of-show sits a boundary most IC leaders will recognise: what leadership has settled, what people can still shape, and who carries forward what emerges.
Sometimes IC brings the answer. Sometimes the answer does not exist yet, and the work is to make enough room for people to find it together.
