What Anna took with her

An engraved illustration of a woman sorting notes on a table.

For two and a half months after her position at UNICEF was abolished, Anna Burlyaeva kept applying and interviewing. She also held on to a quiet hope that she might find her way back.

After 15 years at an organization she loved, leaving was hard to imagine. Nothing had landed, and some of the jobs she was pursuing, she later realized, didn’t fit her strengths.

So she stepped away from the search for a while. She supported her father through health issues, started an LLC, and took on a consultancy.

When she began looking again, she spent three days going through old notes and performance reviews. She considered her experience across disability inclusion, partnerships, project management, and internal communications. There were different directions she could take. Social impact was the part she knew she wanted to keep.

She also gave her days some structure: applications in the morning, a walk at midday, and time for outreach, learning, and her consultancy in the afternoon. It helped her stop feeling that every hour should be spent applying.

In October, Anna shared that she had accepted an offer after more than 25 interviews in four weeks. Those four weeks, she wrote, weren’t the whole story.

“I left UNICEF,” she said, “but INCLUSION didn’t leave me.”
