Gallagher’s State of the Sector 2026/27 survey is now open, exploring how communication helps people understand priorities, build trust, and take action.
If your role includes internal or employee communication, you can take part. Allow around 20 minutes; participants receive first access to the report in March 2027.
Strictly Internal is supporting the survey as a research partner. We’d be delighted if you’d add your perspective to State of the Sector.

More safety reports, please

Did you know that Alaska Airlines has an intranet ticker counting the safety reports employees send in? And the higher the number, the happier the airline is, says communications VP Alexa Rudin at Ragan’s Internal Communications Conference.
Alexa compares it with a construction-site sign counting the days since the last incident. At Alaska, more reports mean more information about what’s happening in the operation.
After Alaska acquired Hawaiian Airlines, Alexa's team launched a shared values campaign with employees from both airlines where safety was central. Employees even have a financial stake in reporting as it counts toward the year-end metrics behind their bonuses.
Alexa says incentives alone wouldn’t keep people reporting. So her team also wants employees to know their concerns are going somewhere. Their “You Report, We Respond” campaign follows up on what employees raise. Even when an investigation finds no issue, the team replies: “We looked into it, but there’s nothing.”

📚 BOOKSHELF

Humble Inquiry | Edgar H. Schein and Peter A. Schein
Some books keep finding their way into a conversation. Katie Macaulay, host of The Internal Comms Podcast, has brought up Humble Inquiry in seven episodes, by our count.
Its appeal is easy to see: even a thoughtful question can carry the answer we’re hoping to hear. The Scheins make room for the answer we haven’t thought of.
