A second look at the intimidating JD

This week, we couldn't help clicking the OpenAI job.

Translating technical developments, product milestones, and complex research concepts. Building trusted relationships with researchers and engineers. Developing research deep dives. Oh my.

We can imagine some very capable communicators quietly moving their cursor toward closing the tab.

But hold it right there. Take a breath. Read it again.

AI. Complex technical and research concepts. Researchers. Engineers. Quite a collection of intimidating nouns.

Now, have a closer look.

Between the nouns you might find something more familiar: verbs. Work you may already have spent years honing. Translate, write, edit, gather input, coordinate reviews, prepare speakers, build relationships.

And then OpenAI hints at something else: “comfortable asking questions until you understand a topic well enough to explain it.” Not knowing everything on day one may be very useful. The employees hearing about the work won't all know it either. Someone has to ask the “stupid” question, notice where an answer still assumes too much, and ask again.

So, with the tab still open, we clicked into one of OpenAI’s research announcements and tried the role for a moment.
