When change is done to people
The transformation team was discussing how to get people to use a new technology. Rewards came up. Competitions, too.
Lindsey Caplan asked them to pause. Their focus groups had already surfaced a concern: employees didn't like change being done to them. Yet the team was discussing ways to push it through.
Caplan walked to the whiteboard and drew her Moved Model. Were they pushing something at people or drawing them in? And was the approach made for the people involved, or could it be for anyone?
The team decided to aim for engagement. That shifted the conversation: instead of focusing only on what the technology could do, they began exploring what employees’ work might look like six months from now. Where might people see themselves in it?
